Since being elected in 2010, I have been working on legislation focused on building a stronger economy, strengthening our public education system, promoting civil rights and good government, and protecting our environment and natural resources.

Economic Development / Job Growth

  • Introduced and passed legislation to aid investment in socially-responsible business ventures
  • Introduced legislation to assist RI start-ups in obtaining funds targeting research and innovation
  • Introduced and passed legislation to improve nightlife safety in downtown Providence
  • Introduced legislation to incentivize banks to lend to RI small businesses
  • Introduced and passed legislation protecting consumers and service employees from wage fraud

Education

  • Passed budget article fully enacting funding formula for RI public schools
  • Introduced legislation to create a student loan tax credit for students who go to college in RI and then stay and work in RI
  • Co-sponsored and passed legislation strictly regulating the use of former hazardous material sites for new school construction
  • Introduced legislation to provide all public school students with equal access to RI mayoral academies

Environment / Renewable Energy

  • Introduced and passed legislation promoting renewable energy projects in RI
  • Co-sponsored and passed legislation regulating debris processing facilities
  • Introduced and passed legislation to preserve open spaces
  • Supported and passed legislation requiring "complete street" road designs providing access for bicyclists, pedestrians, and public transportation users  

Civil Rights / Good Government

  • Introduced and passed legislation strengthening campaign finance disclosure rules for outside groups and SuperPACs in light of U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United.
  • Co-sponsored and passed rules to put all Assembly voting records online within 24 hours
  • Introduced and passed legislation to study statewide election reforms
  • Introduced and passed legislation eliminating unconstitutional restrictions on free speech
  • Introduced and passed legislation protecting homeless men, women, and children from unfair discrimination and civil rights violations
